Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood (Europe)
vs. Tom Lehman and Phil Mickelson (USA)

Mickelson, devastated after his missed putt on No. 18 Friday, changed blades and watched it pay off. Mickelson birdied the third, eighth and 10th to put the Americans 3-up. His long birdie putt on No. 8 brought a huge smile, while a 130-yard pitching wedge on No. 10 left him with a tap-in birdie. It was a par that was one of his biggest shots of the day -- a chip-in at No. 11 to keep the Americans up by three. "I hadn't used (the putter) for the last eight months, but I needed a different look," Mickelson said. "I needed a little more confidence." Meanwhile, Clarke and Westwood failed to produce the kind of magic that had led them to back-to-back wins. "We've played a lot of holes in the last two days, but I'll be ready tomorrow," said Clarke.

Jesper Parnevik and Sergio Garcia (Europe)
vs. Davis Love III and David Duval (USA)

Love and Duval didn't lose, but you wouldn't have known it afterward. "We gave them an out a couple of times and they got out of it," said Love. Added Duval, who sat out the morning matches: "I felt like for the most part we outplayed them." The Americans, who had a 2-up lead after four holes and let 1-up leads get away three times on the back nine, took yet another 1-up lead when Love birdied No. 16. They dodged a bullet when Garcia missed a birdie putt on the 17th that would have evened the match. On No. 18, Garcia was inside of Parnevik, but putted first. He didn't miss to give Europe a crucial half-point, setting off a boisterous European celebration. "That putt at the last is the biggest I've made so far in my professional career," Garcia said later.

Miguel Angel Jimenez and Jose Maria Olazabal (Europe)
vs. Justin Leonard and Hal Sutton (USA)

Jimenez virtually played Leonard and Sutton by himself -- and nearly won the match. He birdied Nos. 4, 5 and 6 to give his team a 2-up lead, but the Americans evened it when Sutton nearly aced No. 16 just moments after Leonard had made a crucial putt to halve the 15th. Jimenez and Leonard both missed potential point-winning putts on No. 17. On 18, both Americans left their approach shots in the front bunker, while Jimenez was safely in the middle of the green. But after Sutton nearly holed his bunker shot, Jimenez watched his 20-footer finish tantilizingly on the edge of the cup.

Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie (Europe)
vs. Tiger Woods and Steve Pate (USA)

Finally, Monty met Tiger. And Montgomerie, who spent much of the afternoon dealing with the boisterous American fans, won. Europe's No. 1 player made birdies on the third, fourth, eighth, 10th, 14th and 15th holes to win his personal duel with Woods, though it was Pate who did most of the damage for the Americans. Pate made three birdies on the front side, but faded late. The turning point was the 15th. With the match all square. Woods and Pate both missed birdie putts, but Montgomerie drained his to give the Europeans a 1-up lead. Lawrie hit a 7-iron within two feet on No. 16 and made the putt to put the Europeans dormie. The match ended when Woods and Pate both missed intermediate-range birdie putts on 17.
