Highlights of Payne Stewart's golfing career:


Major championships
1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes -- Stewart rallied from six strokes behind in the final round with a 67 to edge Mike Reid, Andy Bean and Curtis Strange.

Stewart celebrated his U.S. Open win in 1991.
1991 U.S. Open at Hazeltine National -- Stewart again came from behind to tie Scott Simpson. They played an 18-hole playoff on Monday; Stewart shot 75, but Simpson skies to a 77.

1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2 -- Stewart trailed Phil Mickelson by a shot coming to the 16th hole, but he made a crucial putt while Mickelson bogeyed the hole. He then hit his tee shot to within four feet on No. 17 and made birdie to go ahead by a shot. On the 18th, Stewart made a 15-foot par putt -- the longest putt to win the Open on the finishing hole in history -- to win.


Ryder Cup
1987: Stewart was 2-2. He lost with Larry Nelson to Seve Ballesteros and Jose Maria Olazabal in foursomes on Friday (1-up), and lost with Ben Crenshaw to Ballesteros and Olazabal in foursomes on Saturday (1-up). He teamed with Andy Bean to down Eammon Darcy and Gordon Brand Jr (3 and 2) in fourball on Saturday, then beat Olazabal (2-up) in singles on Sunday.

1989: Stewart was 1-3. He and Lanny Wadkins defeated Howard Clark and Mark James 1-up in the Friday foursomes, but lost with Wadkins to Ian Woosman and Nick Faldo in Saturday foursomes (3 and 2) and with Strange to Clark and James in Saturday fourball. He lost to Olazabal 1-up in singles on Sunday.

1991: Stewart was 2-1-1. He and Mark Calcavecchia defeated Faldo and Woosnam 1--up in Friday foursomes, then teamed with Calcavecchia to top James and Richardson 1-up in Saturday foursomes. He and Fred Couples halved with Ballesteros and Olazabal in the Saturday fourball, and David Feherty defeated Stewart 2 and 1 in the Sunday singles.

1993: Stewart was 3-1. He was routed in his first match of the competition; teamed with Couples, they lost to Woosnam and Bernhard Langer 7 and 5 in foursomes. He rallied with Raymond Floyd in the Saturday foursomes to beat Baker and Lane 3 and 2. The same pair beat Olazabal and Haeggman 2 and 1 in the Saturday fourball, and then Stewart downed James 3 and 2 in Sunday singles.

1999: Stewart was 0-2-1. He halved a Friday fourball match with Davis Love III against Miguel Angel Jimenez and Padrig Harrington. He lost with Justin Leonard in the Saturday foursomes to Jesper Parnevik and Sergio Garcia. And he lost to Colin Montgomerie 1-up in singles, conceding the final putt to Montgomerie on the final hole.
